Description of Elaeagnus ebbingei Gilt Edge - Eleagno

Il Eleagno ebb. Gilt Edge, anche chiamato Chalef di Ebbing, è un arbusto che forma un cespuglio denso e rotondeggiante. Da settembre a ottobre, compaiono dei piccoli fiori bianco argentei. Sono profumati e misurano da 1 a 2 cm di lunghezza.

Il fogliame è persistente e coriaceo. Le foglie lunghe da 6 a 10 cm sono di colore verde scuro con riflessi metallici sulla parte superiore e bordate di giallo oro. Sono argentate sul rovescio. I frutti arancioni che offre Eleagno x ebbengei sono commestibili. Bisogna attendere il mese di maggio affinché siano ben maturi.

Questo cultivar molto rustico può raggiungere i 2 m di altezza a maturità. È un arbusto ideale per siepi tagliate ma anche per siepi libere, macchie arbustive, isolato o persino in vaso. Si trova anche in prossimità del mare. L'Eleagno ebb. Gild Edge proviene dall'incrocio tra l'Elaeagnus pungens e l'Elaeagnus macrophylla.

L’Elaeagnus ebb. Gild Edge si sviluppa bene al sole e in mezz'ombra. Tollerante alla siccità e alle mareggiate. Se non si trova in zona marittima, posizionarlo al riparo dal vento. Piantare questo arbusto da novembre a marzo, al riparo dal gelo, in un terreno drenato, leggero e povero, acido a moderatamente basico. Durante la piantagione, mescolare a metà il terreno del giardino con terriccio. Annaffiare abbondantemente una o due volte alla settimana per favorire il radicamento. Per siepi, potare a giugno e a settembre. Rimuovere anche i rami che compromettono la simmetria della pianta. L’Elaeagnus ebb. Gild Edge è soggetto alla malattia del corallo e ai cocciniglie.
